September 8th, 2010 by cjammet

We’re gearing up for our monthly shop ride this Saturday,  and we hope that you’ll join us.   Erik from Vice Magazine will be leading the ride, and he just sent us the map of where he will be taking us:

The ride will be a brisk 80-miler that we like to call “pleasantly epic.”    It will be a civilized romp through roads a bit less travelled than the typical 9W route.   Perfect fall weather is just starting to rear its head, and we are hoping for a clear day.  We hope you can make it!

Who: Everyone is invited!

What: NYC Velo Monthly Shop Ride

When: Saturday, September 11th.  Meet at the shop at 8AM.  We leave at 830.

Where: The ride begins and ends at NYC Velo- 64 2nd Ave (between 3rd and 4th St)  We’ll ride across the GWB and then follow the map above.

Why: Because we love riding bikes!

Ben from Think Coffee will be in da’ house creating espresso-based masterpieces just for you.  Delicious, delicious baked goods from Blue Sky Bakery will also be provided in order to further convince you to show up and ride your awesome bike with awesome people.  Saddle up!

September 8th, 2010 by cjammet

In order for us to properly express our excitement for the upcoming CX season,  it’s only fitting that we get the ball rolling with a Cyclocross bike and Gear sale.   We’re offering 10-25% off cyclocross bikes, and 15% off CX gear.   The sale will be going on up until our epic CX kickoff party on 9/23.

We want to make it easy for you to try out one out our favorite type of racing.  If you’re a roadie and you’re entertaining the idea of racing CX,  all you need is a bike, MTB shoes, and MTB pedals (embrocation is also strongly reccomended).   Lucky for you, we have all that and more.  Stop by the shop, check out our CX selection, and we’ll take care of you.

Its time to go Muddin’.

BOTW: Bob’s IF

September 2nd, 2010 by cjammet

On this episode of bike of the week,  we get a proper education from the ‘gents over at IF on how to make a stunning, clean bike.  The paint job totally pops,  and it begs for the viewer to take it all in nice and slow.

We hope Bob is happy with his new IF because if he isnt,  there’s a long line of people who would probably commit felonies to get their grubby hands on this gorgeous rig.

Ring in the CX year

September 2nd, 2010 by cjammet

It’s that time of the year again.  The road season is coming to a burnt-out end,  the weather (hopefully soon) gets cooler, and we start to long for mud and cowbells.  the 2010 cyclocross season is set to kick off with Nittany Lion ‘Cross on September 11th.  The season will be chock full of barriers, caution tape, and screaming fans.

In celebration of our favorite racing season,  We’re throwing another season kickoff party.  The event will take place at the shop on Thursday, September 23rd, from 7-9PM.  We will be showing some epic CX movies, drinking delicious Kelso Beer, and its rumored that Wafels & Dinges might unexpectedly show up.

We will have our CX bikes and equipment out and ready to go.  We’ll have some excellent embrocation from Mad Alchemy and Sportique for you to try out.  If you’re interested in trying out this awesome sport,  then stop by.  We’ve got all the equipment an awkward roadie needs to transform into a barrier hopping, beer guzzling machine.

While you’re at it,  don’t forget to pre-register for Staten CX,  which is going down on 11/13.  It’s the only (and therefore the best) Cyclocross race in NYC.

Hup Hup Hup!

D2R2 Ride Report

September 2nd, 2010 by cjammet

D2R2 went down two weeks ago, and a few of our guys headed up with some mutual friends to take part in the long, gravel-ridden suffer fest that makes this sport what it is.   Our very own Chris Harris took the time to recount his experience at the event.   We hope you enjoyed reading this piece it as much as we did.

It has been more than a week since the Deerfield Dirt Road Randonnée, and for the past several days I have been trying to decide how to write about my experience.  It occurred to me that I ought to try and recount the event sequentially, beginning with the after-work drive to Massachusetts in the back of Andrew’s (of NYC Velo) car, listening to Rich Bravo’s anecdotes from the front lines of the war between the sexes, trying not to fall asleep though wedged among bicycle wheels and sleeping bags.  Once at the venue, we pulled on sweaters and wondered how to fall asleep quickest–midnight had past more than an hour before, and race time for the 180K ride would be six-o’clock.  Most of the Rapha Continental men were bivouacking in the fifty-degree night, and I thought to myself that I was happy to be sleeping in a decent tent, out of the chill and dew.  But the more I’ve thought about how to begin writing, the more it has become clear to me that the morning of the event–clear, cold and bright with sun–would be most appropriate; for it was then, as I groped for a cup of coffee with the rest of the tired, that I listened to a piece of music to prepare my head for the ride.

5ive Points: Evelyn Stevens

September 1st, 2010 by cjammet

This week’s installment of 5ive Points has been a long time coming.

What can we say about Evie that hasn’t been said already by the likes of Vogue, Bicycling Magazine, and the Wall Street Journal?   On all accounts,  Evie is a straight-up two-wheeled sensation.    She started out two years ago by winning many of the biggest races in our area, such as Fitchburg, GMSR, Battenkill, and Housatonic Hills.  About a year ago, Evie traded in her pant-suits in finance for lycra and joined team HTC-Columbia, (alongside Mark Cavendish, George Hincapie, and Ina Teutenberg) taking the world of professional women’s racing by storm.  She proceeded to win stages at both Redlands and the Route de France,  as well as finishing 2nd overall at the Route.

The best part of this whole story is that we got to watch this fantasy story happen right in front of our eyes.  We can still remember her passing the pro women’s field at GMSR while riding a 30 lb road bike with a triple.  The NYC Community is a huge fan of Evie’s, and we’re definitely on the bandwagon.

NYCV: What bike do you ride these days?

ES: I am on a Scott and I love it!

NYCV: What’s your favorite ride?

ES: I am currently living in Girona, Spain and I would have to say my favorite ride is anytime I am riding along the coast

NYCV: What’s your favorite post-ride food?

ES: Lately I am returning home from my rides at lunch time and my current food of choice is a salad made with tuna, beets, a hard boiled egg, carrots, celery, mushrooms and cilantro with balsamic vinegar and a dab of pesto, sans lettuce.

NYCV: What’s one thing you always carry on a ride?

ES: I have an uncanny ability to get lost when I am riding so I always bring my HTC phone with me since it has GPS on it, key in helping me figure out where I am. Also, I always carry food, I hate bonking.

NYCV: What’s next for you?

ES: I am currently about to start day 2 of the Hollands ladies tour and then I have the world championships in Geelong, Australia.

Good luck, Evie!

5ive Points: Chris Milliman

August 22nd, 2010 by cjammet

Andrew interviews Chris Milliman, the man behind the UV Epic 3.0:

A few weeks ago I received an invitation to travel up to Hanover, NH to participate in the UV Epic 3.0.  I have no idea what the significance of the title is, but the ride was to venture over into VT, climb up 10,000′ or so, and upwards of 70% of the course would be on dirt roads.  Chris Milliman is, among other things, the mastermind behind the UV Epic 3.0.  He’s also a gifted writer, editor, competitive cyclist, and photographer.  He put together the ride to showcase the roads, and views from the tops of them, around his New Hampshire homebase.  The EV Epic 3.0 lived up to its name (you’d be hard-pressed to put together a more interesting century ride) and save a few flats, was disaster-free.  Hats off to Chris for putting on a great ride and donating his time for the following 5ive Points:

NYCV: What bike do you ride these days?

CM: On the road: a Speedvagen2010. Off-road: Fisher Superfly100. ‘Cross: Ridley X-Night. Whew, that seems like a lot of bikes.

NYCV: What’s your favorite ride?

CM: Impossible to say, we have so much great riding up here on the New Hampshire/Vermont border. I did a great ride in Italy in July in the Dolomites, that was definitely memorable. Off-road, the trails in Lyme, New Hampshire, just north of where I live, are this secret world of incredible singletrack, some of the best mountain biking I’ve ever done.

NYCV: What’s your favorite post-ride food?

CM: Pizza, for sure. But I dream of sausage breakfast sandwiches when I’m bonking on rides, even if I never actually eat them in the end.

NYCV: What’s one thing you always carry on a ride?

CM: Spare and a chain tool, can’t really get anywhere if you end up with a flat or a broken chain.

NYCV: What’s next for you?

CM: Try to mellow out on the amount of travel I do for my work. Even though it’s an essential part of my job and I get to go to some cool places, travel is just murder on the fitness. And I miss my family. So, stay close to home and try to wrestle up some fitness for ‘cross season.
